Winter Feast for the Soul, 2010 A worldwide 40-day spiritual practice period will be observed from January 15 to February 23 centered around a commitment to meditate for 40 minutes each of those days. Guided meditations from the Feast will be available for download throughout the year, so if you miss the offical start, begin your own 40 day commitment, at any time! Our teacher Anam Thubten will be offering a 10-15 minute talk on the Tibetan Buddhist approach on each day after which you are encouraged to continue meditating for 30 minutes on your own. Other guided meditations are available from the perspectives of insight meditation (Vipassana), interdenominational Christianity, contemporary Christian prayer, children’s four minutes of stillness for world peace, Sufi universal meditation, and mindfulness for teens. Newsletters and other supportive and interactive materials are available on the website. The founder of the Feast, now in its third year, is Valerie Skonie who encourages us to “[c]onsider the stories of Noah, Elijah, Moses, Jesus, Buddha, and Mohammed. Each spent forty days in retreat or contemplation. When these prophets returned from their inner journey, they had changed, and, in turn, their world had changed. Now,” she says, it is our turn to participate in this shift and not to look to our spiritual leaders to do it for us.” As the Hopi elders say, Although these meditations have already begun, it’s not too late to join in, to listen to the recorded talks, and to read the materials provided on the website. Each guided meditation will be accessible from archive for at least one year. |
